Cellulite affects up to 90% of women. What causes it, what are its stages, and are there effective ways to prevent it or reduce its symptoms?

Cellulite is one of the most common cosmetic skin problems. It affects most women, but also slim figures, active women, and even some men. Yet, there are still many oversimplifications and inaccuracies surrounding it. What really causes orange-peel skin, why is it more prominent on the thighs, buttocks, or abdomen, and what steps make long-term sense?

Cellulite is a very common, harmless change in skin appearance, where the skin looks lumpy or dimpled. It most often appears on the thighs, hips, buttocks, and abdomen, and is significantly more common in women than in men.

What is cellulite and why does it occur?

Cellulite doesn't just arise from "fat accumulation." It's a combination of changes in subcutaneous fat tissue, fibrous bands, and skin quality. Fat cells push towards the skin, while stronger fibrous structures pull certain areas down. This creates the typical uneven appearance on the surface, known as orange-peel skin.

Several factors contribute to its visibility simultaneously. Genetics, female hormones, age, connective tissue quality, body composition, and lifestyle all play a role. Furthermore, with age, the skin loses elasticity, so irregularities often become more pronounced.

Why it mainly affects women

Cellulite is much more common in women due to the different arrangement of subcutaneous connective tissue and fat distribution. Female tissue is anatomically different from male tissue in this respect, which is why irregularities on the skin surface appear more easily. This is also why it can appear even in women who are not obese and otherwise take care of themselves.

This does not mean that men are not affected at all. Cellulite in men is less common, but can occur, especially with hormonal changes, a higher percentage of body fat, or genetic predisposition.

Where cellulite most often appears

It is particularly typical for the thighs, hips, and buttocks. Cellulite on the butt is also very common, and for some women, so is cellulite on the stomach. In these areas, subcutaneous fat is physiologically deposited more significantly, and changes in tissue structure are therefore more noticeable to the eye.

For some people, it is only visible in certain light or when the skin is compressed, while at other times it is noticeable even at rest. The intensity of its manifestation can change depending on hormonal fluctuations, weight fluctuations, hydration levels, and overall skin condition.

Cellulite in pregnancy is usually more pronounced

During pregnancy, the skin's appearance can change more rapidly than usual. This is often due to a combination of hormonal changes, increased water retention, changes in blood and lymphatic circulation, as well as natural changes in body weight. Therefore, cellulite during pregnancy is not uncommon. Hormonal influences and an increase in fat tissue are known factors that worsen its appearance.

During this period, it is advisable to stick to a gentler regimen. The most effective approach involves adequate exercise, sufficient fluid intake, a well-balanced diet, and regular skin care. Aggressive cosmetic or instrumental interventions should always be discussed with a doctor.

Stages of Cellulite

For orientation, cellulite is often divided into several stages based on how visibly it appears.

  • Stage 1 - irregularities are not normally visible. They appear more when the skin is squeezed or in certain lighting.
  • Stage 2 - the skin already appears slightly uneven, especially when muscles are tensed, sitting, or in side lighting.
  • Stage 3 - dimples and bumps are visible even without squeezing and at a normal glance.
  • Stage 4 - irregularities are pronounced, the skin may appear less firm, and changes are often permanently noticeable.

The more advanced the stage, the less effective isolated solutions usually are, and the more important a long-term, comprehensive approach becomes.

What can worsen the appearance of cellulite

Cellulite doesn't have a single cause. It often worsens with a combination of several factors:

  • lack of regular exercise,
  • weight fluctuations,
  • higher body fat percentage,
  • poor skin and connective tissue quality,
  • older age,
  • smoking,
  • a diet with a predominance of highly processed foods.

According to expert sources, eating habits with a higher proportion of calories, fats, carbohydrates, salt, and industrially processed foods can also contribute to its worsening.

What helps with cellulite in practice

The best results are usually not achieved by one specific method, but by a combination of several measures. Regularity and long-term commitment are particularly meaningful.

Regular exercise

Exercise helps improve body composition, muscle tone, and overall skin appearance. A combination of walking, strength training, and activities that engage the lower body is often beneficial. Expert sources indicate that exercise and reducing a sedentary lifestyle can alleviate the appearance of cellulite, although they generally do not eliminate it entirely.

Stable weight

Large weight fluctuations can harm the skin and subcutaneous tissue. A long-term sustainable regimen is often preferable to quick diets.

Balanced diet

Sufficient protein, fiber, and fluids are important. The overall quality of the diet also matters, not just the calorie count. Long-term excess salt, sugar, and highly processed foods are usually not beneficial for the skin.

Skin quality care

With firmer, better hydrated, and more elastic skin, the surface appears optically smoother. However, cosmetics alone are usually not enough if other supportive steps are missing.

Massages and lymphatic care

Massages or lymphatic care can bring temporary improvement in appearance, especially if fluid retention contributes to the condition. The effect is usually individual and generally requires regularity. Mayo Clinic states that various procedures, including massages, can partially improve the appearance of cellulite, but the results are often not permanent.

What role do cosmetics play?

Many people reach for products designed for problematic areas. Creams or gels specialized for cellulite can be a useful part of a routine if one expects a realistic effect from them. They usually do not act on the deeper structure of the subcutaneous tissue itself, but rather temporarily improve the appearance of the skin surface, for example, by hydration, slight firming, or supporting microcirculation.

Cosmetics make the most sense as a supplement to comprehensive care, not as the sole solution. It is therefore worth watching not only the type of product, but also the regularity of use and the overall regimen.

Professional treatments and their limitations

If cellulite is pronounced and poses a long-term aesthetic problem for an individual, professional consultation can be considered. Various dermatological and aesthetic procedures are available, such as certain types of laser or radiofrequency treatments, acoustic wave therapy, or methods aimed at releasing fibrous bands. However, the results are individual, often temporary, and usually require multiple sessions.

The American Academy of Dermatology points out that some methods may improve the appearance of cellulite according to studies, but not all of them provide the same effect and some results are time-limited.

What to take away from this

Cellulite is a common part of the reality of the female body and does not in itself indicate that something is wrong. It can appear in slim women, athletes, and during periods of significant hormonal changes.

Common cellulite is harmless. However, if there is significant swelling, pain, rapid worsening of the condition, or uncertainty about whether it is truly just cellulite, a consultation with a doctor is appropriate. It is important to distinguish common orange peel skin from other conditions, such as edema, lymphatic system disorders, or skin problems of other origins.

The most effective approach is a sensible and long-term one: regular exercise, body composition care, a quality diet, skin support, and realistic expectations from cosmetics and procedures. Expert sources agree that cellulite cannot be reliably and permanently removed by a single universal step, but its appearance can often be alleviated.
